HISTORY

The Kahnawake Mohawks have been playing lacrosse since the game was invented. Known as the Caughnawaga Indians in the Quebec Lacrosse League in the 70's and earlier, the Kahnawake Mohawks changed their name when their Mohawk Territory decided to officially call Caughnawaga by its real name, Kahnawake. Caughnawaga was a name given by the government nd is no longer used. Kahnawake is a Mohawk word, meaning "By the Rapids." Also gone was the term "Indians" as "Mohawks" better represented the people and the club, though the true name is Kanienkehaka or "People of the Flint".

After the Quebec Lacrosse League folded in the late 80's, Kahnawake was without competition until 1993, when the Iroquois Lacrosse Association was formed. The ILA lasted until 2005 and has included teams from Onondaga, Oswego, Oneida, Tyendinaga, Valleyfield, Akwesasne, Snye, Cornwall, Massena, Ottawa, Ganienkeh and Kahnawake. In their 13 ILA years, the Kahnawake Mohawks won the league title 6 times and went to the President's Cup National Championship 7 times. Most of Kahnawake's players moved on to play for the Quebec league's Lasalle Brasseurs or Longueil Patriotes.

In 2008, Kahnawake Mohawks owner Barry Alfred purchsed the Longueil franchise, which his two sons (Jarrod and Louis) played for and brought the team back to Kahnawake and re-named the team.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

The current team features Captain Louis Alfred, who was the OLA leading scorer in Junior, the ILA scoring leader several times in Senior and also led the Quebec league in scoring. Louis has also been an all-star selection at the President's Cup and had been drafted by the Buffalo Bandits, of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, but chose not to play. Alfred is a former Quebec Major Junior Hockey Player. Another key player is Al Jones, who moved here from Onondaga, NY several years ago. Besides playing for his hometown as a leading scorer in the ILA, Al has played in the NCAA and in the World Championships for the Iroquois Nationals as well as the Syracuse Crunch in the MILL.
